Longleaf pines spend the first 5 to 7 years of their life in what is referred to as the grass stage, in which the tree looks more like a clump of wiregrass than a pine tree. The tree is protected from fire in this form, and meanwhile the tree is growing down, devoting it's energy to growing it's taproot, so that when it is ready to grow up it will be stronger. This approach makes it more resilient.

Longleaf Integrative Therapy is currently in the grass stage.

“Return refers not just to bringing troops out of harm’s way but to complete homecoming for the whole person in body, mind, heart, and soul” (Edward Tick, Warrior's Return: Restoring the Soul After War)
